THE "JAZZ PARAPHRASE" BIG BAND SERIES

The Jazz Paraphrase Big Band Series is a group of compositions written for the purpose of introducing jazz improvisational and ensemble techniques to musicians who have limited jazz experience. All of the charts in this series are based on the chord progressions of well-known and often-played popular standards. All solos are written. I urge the soloists to memorize the written notes, so that he or she will have a solo which can be "plugged in" at a jam session, concert, or at any gig where the particular tune (such as "Autumn Leaves") is being played. Chord changes are also provided in the solo parts, so that more advanced players can improvise their solos. "Licks" (melodic figures) from these written solos may also be memorized and practiced in all keys for use in future improvisations. In addition, I urge soloists to freely modify or embellish the solo(s), but only after the written notes are perfectly learned and memorized.  All of the compositions in this series are written for 5 saxes, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, guitar, piano, bass and drums.

Almost All The Things - A classic be-bop style composition based on the chord progression of "All the Things You Are" by Jerome Kern.  Very difficult, but fun to play once it's mastered!  Solos for guitar, trumpet, piano and bass, with a swinging (but difficult) shout chorus.  Click here to listen to a MIDI playback.  Click here to view a sample of the score.

Autumn Returns - A classic be-bop style composition based on the chord progression of "Autumn Leaves," music by Joseph Kosma, words by Johnny Mercer.  Moderately difficult melody, played by trumpet, tenor sax and guitar.  Solos for guitar, trumpet and bass.  Click here to listen to a recording of the chart played by the 2005 UAB Jazz Ensemble, directed by Ray Reach.  Click here to view a sample of the score.

Satin Smoothie - A medium tempo composition based on the chord progression of "Satin Doll," music by Duke Ellington, words by Johnny Mercer.  Moderately difficult melody, played by tenor sax, trombone and guitar. Solos for trumpet, alto sax and bass. Click here to listen to a recording of the chart played by the 2005 UAB Jazz Ensemble, directed by Ray Reach. Click here to view a sample of the score.

Take The Bass Train - A hard-swinging composition based on the chord progression of "Take The A Train," by Billy Strayhorn.  A bass feature, the bass opens and closes the piece, plating the (moderately difficult) melody. Solos for trumpet, trombone, saxes (soli) and, of course, bass. Click here to listen to a recording of the chart played by the 2005 UAB Jazz Ensemble, directed by Ray Reach.
